The RBL Framework was developed as part of my master's thesis in Digital Solutions for Design and Media at LAB University of Applied Sciences.
The research explored how human factors can inform the design of spatial user interfaces in extended reality (XR). It drew on prior research on cognitive load, ergonomics, calm technology, spatial interaction, and XR design to develop a systematic approach to spatial UI design.
This website presents the current, evolving version of the framework, while the thesis presents the original published version of the RBL Framework and documents the research behind it.
The thesis introduces the RBL Framework, a systematic approach to spatial UI design that helps designers make intentional decisions about the purpose, priority, behaviour, timing, and placement of UI elements.
The framework proposes semantic role as a way to define the purpose and meaning of every UI element before making decisions about its behaviour or placement.
The thesis introduces the Semantic Role Matrix as a practical tool for mapping UI elements, identifying prioritisation conflicts, documenting design decisions, and evaluating existing interfaces.
